Todays saint

Saint Antonius of Florence

He was known as the "Father of the poor" . By all accounts He was a humble and holy man . A man who did not  seeks honors in this world but honor yet still  found him . He was appointed Archbishop of Florence in 1446 not because He sought it out and desired the title or prestige but because He was forced into the position by then Pope  Eugene IV.

"It is also reported that Antoninus resisted so much being appointed that the pope had to threaten him with excommunication if he would not accept the responsibility and the honor which was so contrary to his humility. "

And here is where we can learn much from this great saint . Even though He was raised to such a prominent and important position , He did not allow that act or the new title/position  destroy him . He did not see this new title as a oppurtunity to relax and enjoy the fruits of his labours . Though He did not wish for the postion in humble obediance He accepted and not one to do just enough to get by , He excelled at this unwanted post . Using it to help build the church to a better standing  in holiness and devotion to our Lord.

He was loved like a modern day celebrity , always hearing his praises wherever he may go . Imagine it ,  the Pope himself wishes for your help in matters .It would be all to easy to start believing your own press. Especially for him because He truly was a living saint . They were not lying , but they only were stating the truth .

He was on watch for his soul and always aware of the great battle that we are in .His eyes ,like the servant of Elisha ,was opened to see the great war for the souls of men , for our very own soul  . Knowing his self and how easy we are to fall , He battled and maintained the ground He was standing upon .The solid ground of Christ , a foundation that will not put its builder to shame .  Always remaining humble and mirroring his master and " washing the feet of others " becoming a servant to all .

St. Antoninus wrote that the task of a bishop is threefold: " he must lead a holy life; he must exercise the authority which he is entrusted with; he must be useful to the Church". He did this by being a servant always . A servant to the Church and representing her  before the world . A servant to his flock , especially the poor , many times he would sell his very own furniture or clothing and do without so that others may have the ability to stay warm , to eat etc . And a servant to his soul , He was always to be found in prayer and  doing all with the strength and talents that his Lord have given him to run the race before him .

On the vigil of the feast of the Ascension, 1459, St Antoninus died among his Dominican brothers who had come to pray the office for these last days around his death bed.

The saint's last words were: "Servire Deo regnare est", "to serve God is to reign."

The sign of the cross...

can be deadly

St. Rene Goupil

"I gave Rene' this title of martyr, not only because he had been killed by enemies of God and His Church, and also while engaged in obvious charity on behalf of his neighbor, placing himself in evident danger for the love of God; but, especially, because he had been killed for his prayers and the sign of the cross.
He had been living in a cabin where he had nearly always openly said his prayers. This did not please at all a superstitious old Iroquois who was there. One day, on seeing a little child of four years of age in the cabin, in an excess of devotion and love and with a simplicity we others - more wise in the ways of the flesh than he! - would not have practised, he removed his head covering, placed it on the child's head and made a large sign of the cross over his body.
The old Iroquois, seeing this, ordered a young Iroquois in the cabin who was on the point of going on the warpath to kill Rene'. And the young man did just that, as we have explained.
The mother herself of this child, on a trip that I made in her com-pany, told me that it was because of the sign of the cross that Rene' had been killed. And the old Iroquois who had given the order for his death, one day when he had called me into his cabin, said to me when he saw me blessing myself before eating: "There you have exactly what we hate! Now you know why they killed your companion and why they will kill you. Our neighbors the Dutch do not make this sign." "

ST. ISAAC JOGUES account of of his death

There is more that could be said of this saint.

He was blind .

He had a desire to join the Jesuits but was  rejected by Jesuits .

Not one to give up , He studies to become a medic .

Then later joins the Jesuits as a layperson and willingly receives no pay for his work.

Becomes a missionary .

Suffers greatly for  showing the  love of Christ to the Huron people when He is captured by the Iroquois.

"His body was livid with bruises so that one could see in his face only the white of his eyes."

Was given an opportunity to escape..refused it .

Later is killed for making the sign of the cross .

Dies with the Holy name of Jesus on his lips.

The first martyr of North America .

Saint for the day

                                                                   Bd.  Ulrika Nisch

"The spirit is occupied with God; work is sanctified through union with God."

Interesting non saintly fact learned :

Pictures can be deceiving ....

Saintly Observation :

Take a look at our saint for today's picture . How do you imagine her , now be honest, what words come to mind?

Stern  maybe
Morose  it appears
Boring  without a doubt

Now this is why pictures are deceiving at times . Bd. Ulrika Nisch was by all accounts none of these things .She was a young , happy women who though suffering setbacks in her life ( sickness etc ) still enjoyed life .This is wat I love about the saints , they teach us so many things some things we should already know. We have all heard the saying  " dont judge a book by its cover " well here with this saint I ahve come to a greater appreceation of that truth .

She only lived to the age of 30 and like another more famous saint " the Little flower " she made what appeared to be little impact upon those who lived with her .

Her time was mainly spent in the kitchen , preparing meals , washing dishes , doing mundane jobs , a life that  many would consider filled with things that are unable to to bring about a saint . But like the more famous Brother Lawrence  she knew the secret of how to turn the everyday aspects of life into opportunity for growth in Holiness and Union with God .

She was a secret gem only to be revealed  later to the world after her death . Soon after her leave to go home to her Heavenly Father ,this "little sister" would quickly become well renowned , with reports spreading of great miracles occurring due to her intercession .In 1987 she was Declared a Blessed by Blessed John Paul II.

St. Duje Bishop/Marytr of Salona
Interesting non saintly fact learned  ...
There is a city named Split in Croatia in the county of Split-Dalmatia , I find this to be  oddly funny. Mind you I used to live in a city named Ding Dong .

Saintly fact learned ...
Faith was (is now still for many ) expensive and truly to be a christian esp. a Bishop was a contract with the world for death ( violent ) , He truly  lost his head along with 7 others under the persecution of  Roman Emperor Diocletian in the year 304

St. Duje brave witness to the faith and example of loving Christ to the point of bloodshed pray for us

Special saint for today is..

                                               Saint Apollonia of Alexandria

I have a toothache and well St. Tylenol is just not working too well .

This is a amazing saint , listen to her story :

She was a consecrated virgin , a pagan mob after a prophecy from one of their priests seizes her and decides to remove  her teeth  with pincers,( as a side note she is the patron saint for Dentist )  after that she was given the choice of renouncing Christ or being burned alive;

now pause and ponder what would you do ?

Your a young lady who just has had her teeth removed violently for no reason except your a Christian

Me ,in all honesty would sadly give deep thought about renouncing Christ and living whatever type of life I could live after enduring such a harrowing ordeal ( Lord I believe , help my unbelief )

Her, well she ,

she lept onto the fire herself.

Oh me of little faith , Lord may I come to love and desire to show your great worth to that degree .

Here is her prayer for those suffering with tooth problems :

O Glorious Apollonia, patron saint of dentistry and refuge to all those suffering from diseases of the teeth, I consecrate myself to thee, beseeching thee to number me among thy clients. Assist me by your intercession with God in my daily work and intercede with Him to obtain for me a happy death. Pray that my heart like thine may be inflamed with the love of Jesus and Mary, through Christ our Lord. Amen. O My God, bring me safe through temptation and strengthen me as thou didst our own patron Apollonia, through Christ our Lord. Amen
